Questions

Can I use Petal as contraception?

No. Fertile-window estimates are approximations from past cycles. They are not reliable enough to prevent pregnancy.

What happens if I lose my phone?

Your data goes with it, which is the point. Save a backup file now and then (Insights → Save a backup file) and keep it somewhere private.

Why is it free?

Petal costs almost nothing to run, because there are no servers storing your data. We'd rather it be free and trustworthy.
